Once upon a time, there was a farmer named Baldev in a village. He was living there with his wife Rukmini and a son Anand. Agriculture was the source of their income.

One day Baldev was going to the market; On the way, he found a puppy in critical condition. Baldev became merciful and brought him home. Seeing a puppy Rukmini became furious.

Rukmini (shouting angrily) – With a hardship, we are subsisting. Now, how will you arrange the food for this puppy?

Baldev – Why are you furious? He will eat what we eat. How much will a small puppy eat?

Rukmini – He is small but will be an adult after a few years, and then he will eat more than you. If he ever falls ill, who will take medicine?

Ignoring Rukmini, Baldev fed the puppy with milk and made him lie down in the courtyard. Rukmini didn’t like that puppy. She would never allow him to enter the house. On the other hand, Baldev loved him unconditionally and called him Bholu.

Bholu and Anand were growing together. Both of them used to play together. Bholu would go where Anand go. In this way, there was a deep friendship between the two, but Rukmini used to keep Anand away from Bholu. She panicked that Bholu might harm her child. Therefore she doesn’t allow Bholu to wander around Anand in her presence.

Bholu was loyal to his master. Whatever food he got, he would eat with great delight. One day, Baldev and Rukmini went to the farm. Anand was sleeping at home, and Bholu was guarding the house. Rukmini forgot to blow out the fire in the chulha (fireplace), and soon the house caught fire.

Listing the news of the fire, Rukmini and Baldev felt like the ground was slipping under their feet. Rukmini was crying while thinking about her son that she might not be able to see him alive. When Baldev and Rukmini reached home, they lost their wits.

Bholu was unconscious and lying on the ground. Anand wept and hugged his mother tightly. Rukmini caressed Anand and said, “It is the blessings of God that you are safe.”

The villagers informed Rukmini that Bholu jumped into the fire without caring for his life and dragged Anand out of the house. For this reason, Anand was safe, but half of Bholu’s body got burnt in the fire. Seeing Bholu’s love for Anand, Rukmini’s heart filled with compassion, and the guilt tumbled over her eyes. She bowed down on the feet of Bholu.
